Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information Horizon Academic Press collects, why, and how we handle it when you use our websites and publishing platform. We aim to collect only what we need to operate the platform and publish scholarship.

Who is responsible for your data

Horizon Academic Press, Kampala, Uganda, is the data controller for personal information processed through our websites and platform. For any privacy or data-protection question, or to exercise your rights, contact info@horizonacademicpress.com.

Information we collect

  • Account information you provide when registering — such as your name, email address, affiliation and, optionally, ORCID iD.
  • Submission and review content — manuscripts, metadata, correspondence, and reviews you upload or write as part of the editorial process.
  • Usage information — basic technical data (such as IP address and browser type) and essential cookies needed to keep you signed in and secure.

How we use it, and our legal bases

We use your information to operate the platform, manage peer review and publication, communicate with you about your submissions and account, ensure security, and meet legal and ethical obligations. Published articles and their associated metadata (including author names and affiliations) are public by nature and form part of the permanent scholarly record. Where data-protection law applies, we rely on the following legal bases: performing our agreement with you and providing the service you request; your consent (for example to be listed publicly, which you may withdraw); our legitimate interests in operating and securing the platform and advancing scholarly communication; and compliance with legal obligations.

Sharing and international transfers

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as needed with service providers that help us run the platform (such as hosting, email delivery and identifier/indexing services), with a journal's editors and reviewers as part of the editorial process, and where required by law or to protect rights and safety. Some of these providers, and our international authors, editors and readers, may be located in other countries; where personal data is transferred across borders we take reasonable steps to ensure it remains appropriately protected.

Cookies

We use only essential cookies required for authentication and security. We do not use them to track you across other websites.

Your rights

Subject to applicable law and to our need to preserve the integrity of the published scholarly record, you may request access to, correction, deletion or a copy of your personal information; object to or ask us to restrict certain processing; and withdraw consent where we rely on it. Note that we generally cannot remove personal data that forms part of a published article, as this is necessary to maintain the accuracy and permanence of the scholarly record. To make a request, email info@horizonacademicpress.com. If you believe we have not handled your data properly, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection supervisory authority.

Retention, security and changes

We retain information for as long as needed to provide our services and meet legal and scholarly-record obligations, and we take reasonable measures to protect it. We may update this policy; material changes will be posted on this page.
